Importance of Health science

What Is Health Science?

The overall goal of health science is the improvement of human and animal health through scientific research. Read on for more information regarding this discipline.

Health Science Major

A bachelor's degree with a major in health science prepares students for a variety of careers in health science and health care. Generally, programs include both classroom lectures and hands-on learning, such as lab work, in order to most effectively prepare graduates for the field. Coursework may include biology, physiology, environmental health, health informatics, among others. Although not the case in every program, some students may be required to complete an internship or practicum prior to graduation. This may take place in a research facility or health center, such as a hospital.

Healthcare Economics

Healthcare industry principles associated with administrative positions will be emphasized. Topics include quality of care, legislative policies that impact prices and financial analysis of businesses and their healthcare expenditures.

Law and Ethics

This course will expose students to interest groups, policymakers and shareholders that drive healthcare policy. Ethical considerations of regulatory agencies and the socioeconomic effects of industry decisions will be discussed.

Quality Management

This course will teach students about the operations that go into improving healthcare outcomes. Students will explore major topics like the techniques that are used for healthcare quality assessments and the role of government agencies in ensuring organizations keep up-to-date with appropriate credentials.

Delivery Systems

An overview of the healthcare industry is provided through this course with regard to the services that are rendered to patients via third-party payers and their reimbursement policies. Various levels of care will be studied, including geriatric care, medical transplants and community health centers.

Population Health

This course will explore the methods of solving healthcare issues on a public level. Important areas of study include evaluations based on public health data and the development of programs to encourage a healthy population.

Importance of health science education for personal fitness trainers

Using a questionnaire developed for the current study, the Fitness Instructors Knowledge Assessment (FIKA(Copyright )), we examined relations between commonly used indicators of knowledge (training and experience) and actual knowledge in the five areas of (a) nutrition, (b) health screening, (c) testing protocols, (d) exercise prescription, and (e) general training knowledge regarding special populations. FIKA provided reliable measures of knowledge in these areas, which are of critical importance in developing an optimal fitness program for the client and for avoiding unnecessary injuries. A survey of 115 health fitness professionals revealed that a bachelor's degree in the field of exercise science and possession of American College of Sports Medicine or the National Strength and Conditioning Association certifications as opposed to other certifications were strong predictors of a personal trainer's knowledge, whereas years of experience was not related to knowledge. These findings suggest that personal fitness trainers should have licensing requirements, such as a bachelor's degree in exercise science and certification by an organization whose criteria are extensive and widely accepted, before being allowed to practice their craft.
